BIOGRAPHY>complete biography

Muhadin Kishev was born in 1939 in the village of Chegem II, near the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria in the Caucasus, in the former Soviet Union. In 1965 he graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Krasnodar and at the same time was awarded the medal for acrobatic aviation, so completing his Military service.

In 1973 he was admitted to the Union of Artists and during the first 20 years of his artistic career worked in the Monumental Arts which gave him greater freedom of expression. He made several professional trips to Poland, Germany, Italy, Nepal and to India.

The early days of Perestroika in Russia, saw the creation of a group of young, talented professional artists with Muhadin at their head as mentor, for which he was awarded the prize of “Lenin Comsomol”. The group painted in the Artists’ Residences “Baikal” and “Goriachi Kliuch”, where in Soviet times free expression had been restricted. Their work was often censured, and so it was with Muhadin, whose pictures were excluded for not conforming to Social Realism – pictures which were later to enjoy great success in Russia and beyond. In 1994 already in his maturity, instead of resting on his laurels, he was invited to spend four years in London to work as visiting artist in the highly experimental atmosphere of the Chisenhale studios in East London, where he had a number of successful exhibitions, among which was one in aid of the war children in the Caucasus.

While still a child, he heard the “call of the South” and since 1998 he has been living and working in Andalusia in his Studio in Los Caños de Meca in the Province of Cadiz, where in the year 2000 at the University Hospital of Puerto Real, he had a life-saving operation by the team of surgeons under the command of Dr. Miguel Velasco.

Muhadin takes part regularly in charity exhibitions such as the Gorbachev Foundation for sick children, “Children in crisis” in London, the APNA in Cadiz and his own solo exhibition in London´s Trafalgar Square for the children in Chechnya. With the creation of the Kishev Art Foundation he has organised auctions of his own paintings for the orphanages in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Muhadin divides his time between his Studios in Spain and in Moscow, where he attends to matters of Contemporary Art in the Academy and works on new artistic projects. He is frequently invited as guest artist to give master classes to students, where he shares with others the techniques of the Russian School of Art, developed by him over a lifetime of dedication.

Muhadin Kishev’s work is permanently on show in Spain, in the Gallery “MossCo Art World” in Puerto Real, and in his Studio in Los Caños de Meca, in the Province of Cadiz.  It may also be seen in his Studio in Moscow, the Gallery Vincent and in the MMoMA - the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, which has a selection of his latest work in its permanent exhibition. The Museum of Fine Arts in Nalchik proudly owns a collection of over 100 paintings from the Soviet period of the artist.
